OLYMPIC SWIMMER’S ADVICE TO KEEP KIDS SAFE THIS SWIM SEASON

Olympic swimmer Cullen Jones has some tips to keep your kids safe at the pool this summer. He had a drowning-scare at a waterpark when he was 5, but that motivated his parents to get him into swim lessons. He later went on to win two golds and two silvers at The Olympics and he even set a world record! Hear his advice to keep your kids safe at the pool this summer.

STORY FORMAT: Web/Print Article WORD COUNT: 493 WRITTEN BY: Rebecca Guldberg HEADLINE: Olympic Medalist Cullen Jones' Has Advice to Keep Your Kids Safe This Swim Season A four-time olympic medalist and world-record holder has some advice to keep your kids safe when they hit the pool this summer. When Cullen Jones was five years old, a near-drowning experience at an amusement park left him shaken but determined to overcome his fear of the water. "Swimming lessons save lives," Jones says. "Children are drawn to water, whether it's a backyard pool, a hot tub, a pond, or a river. It's better to teach them how to be safe in the water than to instruct them to avoid it and hope they listen." Jones' parents enrolled him in swim lessons after his traumatic experience, but it took five different instructors before he started feeling comfortable again in the water. This persistence paid off, as Jones went on to become a two-time Olympian, four-time medalist, and current world record holder. "I was a bit of a late bloomer," Jones admits. "I knew my friend Michael Phelps was going to be an Olympian at birth. I heard it much later in life." At 21 years old, a coach told Jones he thought he could make the Olympic team, and that was the push he needed to pursue his swimming dreams. Jones competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics, bringing home two gold and two silver medals. He fondly remembers the camaraderie and competition of the Olympic village, but also the importance of maintaining his game face when it was time to race. Now at 40 years old, Jones is a father to a 4-year-old son and a passionate advocate for swim safety. He partners with Leslie's Pool Supplies to promote three key steps for a safe swimming season: ensuring clean pool water, securing the pool area, and enrolling in swim lessons. You can take a water sample to any of Leslie's stores nationwide and they'll test it for contaminants, but Leslie's also offers an at-home testing product called AccuBlue® and AccuBlue Home® so you can do it yourself. It's also important to secure your pool in case children wander out to the pool when adults aren't around. Leslie's offers many different types of pool covers, alarms and fencing options. Harris Poll Survey: Nearly Half of Parents Say Their Child Can’t Swim According to a 2023 Leslie’s-commissioned survey conducted by The Harris Poll, nearly half the parents of children under 18 years of age say their child does not know how to swim, and 61% say their child has not taken swimming lessons. Almost 30% of parents say they are concerned about their child drowning. In that same poll, only 63% of American adults indicated they are very comfortable being around water, and 36% of those surveyed said they do not know how to swim. Here are some statistics: •Drowning is the single leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1–4. •Drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury death in children and adolescents ages 5–19, behind motor vehicle crashes. •May, June and July mark the deadliest months for drowning deaths. •There’s an 88% chance that a child will be safer in the water and not drown if they have formal swimming lessons. Jones emphasizes that while flotation devices can help build confidence in the water, they are no substitute for actual swim lessons. He encourages parents to stick with it if their child doesn't click with the first instructor, just as his own mother did. "Find the teacher," Jones advises. "If it's not the first one, it's okay. Maybe there's another one. Just keep trying." Jones and Leslie's are teaming up with 'Boys & Girls Clubs of America' and 'The American Red Cross' to help fund swimming and water safety education for families who can't afford these lessons. You can donate in any Leslie's store or online at LesliesPool.com/Donate through October 31st, 2024. As Jones prepares to head to the 2024 Paris Olympics to cheer on Team USA, he looks forward to seeing the new generation of swimmers compete. But his true passion lies in helping others learn to swim and stay safe in the water, just as he did all those years ago. "Swimming lessons save lives," Jones reiterates. "It's about having fun. We're not just here doom and glooming. We want everyone to be safer around the water so that we can have more fun on the water."
